um if you don't mind changing the title of the thread to "Japanese words"? the Japanese people don't like being called "Jap", its quite offensive to them...

anyway!

Some greetings!

おはようございます (ohayou gozaimasu) - Good morning!

こんにちは (konnichiwa) - Good afternoon! (can be used as hello in general)

こんばんは(konbanwa) - good evening!

さよなら (sayonara) - goodbye!

またね (mata ne) - see you again!

おやすみなさい (oyasuminasai) - good night!

Here is the basic introduction to the others

Hajimemashite, Watashino namaewa Samueru to moshimasu
Kotoshiwa juu nana sai desu
Watashi wa West Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia sunde imasu
Mina-san
Doozo Yoroshiku Onegai shimasu

The meaning are...
Let's me introduce my name is Samuel
I'm 17 years old
I lived in West Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia
It's Nice to meet you all

EDIT
But I'm already 18 years old now so Juu Hachi
Juu mean 10 and Hachi mean 8

ano... 'to moushimasu' is humble form... and it's a verb meaning "called" (i'm called _____) so if you're going to use 'watashi no namae wa _____' (my name is) usually you'll end with 'desu'. usually you use humble form throughout your speech, not just the first line or anything... otherwise you can just say 'watashi no namae wa _____ desu' or 'watashi wa ________ desu'.

samn wrote:Watashi wa West Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia sunde imasu

there should be a place indicator there so it's 'Indonesia ni sundeimasu' ne?

for 'sorry' a stronger word is 'gomenasai'; 'sumimasen' is less heavy (for less serious...situations?)

^ Yep. Sumimasen may mean (depending on situation):

Excuse me.
Sorry.
Pardon?
Thank You.

You will also hear this basic phrase often:

Naruhodo (I see; Indeed)
Mochiron (Of course; Certainly)
Chotto matte kudasai! (Please wait a minute!)

And please do remember to use the "polite" terms when talking in Japanese. What you usually hear in animes are in "slang" form so it's better to study the polite terms before the slang ones.

I got a question... Most of you might already know this, but what's the difference again in using "Sumimasen" and "Gomenasai" when saying "Sorry"? I keep forgetting. :P

EDIT: Saw an explanation above my post. Ehe. Sorry. Didn't read it earlier... Let me rephrase my question. What kind of specific situations would qualify as "less serious" so you could use "Sumimasen"? And also what situations would you use "Gomenasai"? Just to be clear. :P

ok so for example you bump into your friend, you will say sumimasen, but if you bump into your senior, or some one of a higher rank than you, like teacher or someone you don't know, you'll say gomenasai. Alternatively, if you broke some one's things, you will say gomenasai. sumimasen is also used when you're trying to get some one's attention (like if you wanna ask directions on the street or something) oh and when someone helps you you can say sumimasen because you feel that you've inconvenienced that person. does this help?

hello--(polite and formal the same leh...) konnichiwa, ohayo gozaimasu, kombanwa (see above for timings)
oops O.o? i guess you apologize then...?
good-- ii (the adjective), ii desu (that's good), ii desu ne (isn't that good-rhetorical question), ii ne (wow so good/lucky)
just kidding-- nanchatte! or nante ne?
lol at the just kidding one XD

That helped a lot. Those two words are used so interchangeably that it's a bit confusing to figure out which one to use in a specific situation. But I think I get the idea now, so thanks for that. :D
