Some of you are going to hate me for this, but I'm a little troubled about this particular question:

Is SCANDAL becoming too manufactured?

I know it may seem a little...controversial, for lack of a better term, but since this was first posed on Facebook I wanted to know what you guys think personally about this? Nerd

Wassup rreizend! Hi been down with the flu dude, I'm now resting up to regain my strength! Rage

It's ok for bands to explore new soundscapes and still retain their own musical roots. The girls of SCANDAL, however, are rushing a little too much and in trying to appeal to a mainstream audience are beginning to lose track of why exactly they started SCANDAL in the first place: the music
The entertainment industry is commercialising them too much and they're starting to appear as though they've come fresh out of a neatly- wrapped plastic package. They're still so young and impressionable, I really don't want to see them burnt out and lost in this plastic pop machine that is the Japanese music industry Stars

Yes, I agree with you, Porcu..
But, I think it's not SCANDAL's personil fault.. I think it's the recording company who made SCANDAL song too manufactured... We could just hope next song would be more 'rock'!!

I also notice the difference of Space Ranger and Yumemiru Tsubasa,
Yumemiru Tsubasa is great infact i love it,
but it seems like it's not like them.
Sorry for those people who'll hate me about this but it's just my opinion...

well, i didn't say yumemiru tsubasa is bad, but it's not as rock as SCANDAL's song before like doll or space ranger..

Well, that's what you get for trying to impress mainstream audience plus signing up with Epic Records which is a sister company of Sony thus making it Sony.

I hope the new single would totally be different from the last and get back to their garage rock genre.

To sum it up in two words: SCREW SONY!

Exactly my sentiments, kono! I hate how they are marketing SCANDAL and making them look like they're the biggest thing since sliced bread (Jonas Brothers, anyone?), instead of helping to establish them as a musically talented band that plays great music that people enjoy... it's so sad, guys Shy SCREW SONY INDEED!! Punches

To clear things up as to why SCANDAL signed the Epic Contract: Evil Grin

According to the All-Knowing Wikipedia entry on SCANDAL, Kitty records was releasing limited quantities of their singles so they talked to the head of Sony Music Japan and they were signed to Epic Records.

Well, it kinda goes like this, "Hey dude, I just found this out! Four really cute girls are performing live here at Shiroten/Budokan. Oh man, you gotta check them out. they're totally awesome! If they have a single on sale, I'm going to buy it." (This is just an assumed situation for a Japanese guy)

As far as I'm concerned, I don't want them to end up like "Insertnameofbandorartistshere".

Let's just see what SCANDAL has in store for us fans. Sony is doing some marketing and legal stuff or whatever, promoting and all that sh*t.

I'll just throw something in here:

They use too much electronic sounds in their songs nowadays. They should try to recapture the sounds of DOLL,Shoujo S,S.L. Magic,in short, raw uncut garage rock sound.

And by "they" i mean the song producers.

I don't mind them infusing electronica into their sound if it helps to dynamically improve the overall SCANDAL sound but I can't help but feel that it's being force-fed to them. Imagine a regular conversation between Epic Records and SCANDAL:
Spoiler:
Epic: Hey girls, let's do away with all the garage rock! It's so 1999 XP
SCANDAL: Hmm, we dunno...
Epic: If Tohoshinki can do it and still be relevant, why not you guys? Everyone's doing it, even the Jonas Brothers! XD
SCANDAL: Really? We could give it a try, we guess! If that means getting to meet more fans, let's do it!
Epic: Hehe, suckers Evil Grin
It's only a re-enactment of what may happen behind closed doors but supposing what if that all is somewhat true? Our girls are so young, and at that impressionable age so what if this is so?

And about what you said Eugene, yes, they've been putting in a lot of electronic sounds, for me these are unneeded sounds. I wish they could get back to the DOLL, S.L. Magic sounds even ShoujoS and Sakura Goodbye and Space Ranger.

I know that SCANDAL owes a lot to Epic for promoting, advertising, live tours, expos and others that might come. I also know that they kinda own SCANDAL and with that, they have a say in everything like what porcupine_tree showed.

yeah, agree with what most of you said. i thought it was just me but i guess a lot of people feel the same. what i luv about SCANDAL is the raw rock power they generated when they started out. young people playing music for the love of the rock spirit. totally pure and idealistic. but now.. too much make up, overly bright school uniforms, and LESS jumping around. and they seem untouchable now. conducting interviews with pop show hosts when they should be interacting directly with their fans. why? Why? WHY???

DJ, your sentiments are shared by many of us here who love the girls for who they are not for what the industry wants them to be! I dunno about their interaction with fans but I don't think they neglect their fanbase at all, in fact they had a recent summit with the SCANDAL fans in Hongkong and they had a meet-and-greet with their fans too. The price of fame: too many people like you but you spend less and less time with your fans and that is sad to say the least

Yeah, no more jumping and no more "LIVELY" or sharp edged sound and rock.

The recent SCANDAL Summit was just to prove that they're not being neglectful of their fanbase. But what if it would eventually lead in neglecting us, the fans

That is what I fear most.....

Kono, I never knew you felt that way... to be honest I have mixed reactions about the girls' interaction with the fans but they do try to meet their fans whenever possible but who knows in future? But I'm not going to psychoanalyze this because I'm already way past this and I very much resigned myself to listening to the music and hoping they don't neglect their fans and allow themselves to become too commercialised

That's just my opinion and I also know that it might or might not happen. If it ever happens, I don't know what I'll do :D

Evil Grin

Anyway, back to topic.

I'm still reading a lot of people's comments and opinions about this matter. I'll ask some of my friends who also listen to SCANDAL and see what they think of this.

I'm a little surprised that this thread's getting a lot of activity as of late! I didn't know there were a lot of fans here who felt this way about the girls out of their love for them and their music and I'm actually glad that this is addressed directly here Smile

@rreizend: I feel what you feel about Haruna's reaction. Maybe she's just upset or something about the camera and the cameraman. They never released that footage and I know most want it.

Perhaps she was just upset about the water in the PV...Or that her hair was all fluffed up.

Hmm, Haru-chan doesn't seem that angry at all... maybe she tripped over a cable so she was annoyed for a brief second?
Whatever the case is, I agree with the sentiments about SCANDAL's image, I miss them when they were performing back in 2008: they were popular on the indie scene and hadn't become mainstream yet but they had that spark and energy in their performances and on their CDs that is slowly but surely diminishing in my opinion Shy
