SCANDAL - Girls' Rock Generation Approaches.
- It was one year plus ago when we first heard about SCANDAL, that was also the time when they started to rise.
Compared with their seniors, SCANDAL used just two years to gain a lot of fans' heart.
Not just they were touring around Japan, they also broke into USA and made their ancestors proud.
We only can conclude that the generation of Girls' Rock is coming!
SCANDAL earned their chance to tour around USA despite they formed just 2 years, which was really an amazing feat to reach.
From formation until success, which was the hardest time?
RINA: Because we didn't have enough experience of performing oversea, we felt like there's a lot of people there, we had to face countless amount of challenges! We had to learn about languages and live performances. Before we went to USA, we always thinked about how would it really feel like when we're really performing on stage. After we went there, we realised there was so many people in the live performance, those challenges were like we have to go through few layers of wall, it was an exciting but nervous experience.
In USA, did you all have any event that gave you all strong impression?
MAMI: Uhm, incident with strongest impression... It should be the time when we were performing live! Because it was the first time we performed live oversea, we performed five days out of five days when we were there. Luckily, it seemed like those audience recognised us, they responded us with passion, some even know how to sing our songs! Like Seattle, although we were unfamiliar about this place, but there was thousands of people came and watched our performance, that really made us happy! There was also some memorable and happy experiences such as memorizing everyone's name and singing on stage!
- When you were still a kid, are your dreams related to this category?
*This category might be referring to music.*
MAMI: Uhm, I only thinked about making props, working on the backstage. I actually never thought of performing on stage! (Laugh)
RINA: I already love to perform since I was in the kindergarten! But for music, chasing idols... becoming of fan of someone and etc were never my interest. But for chasing something I love, those mood and actions will make me feel hot-blooded!
HARUNA: As for me, when I was small, I always thought of performing in front of everyone. I also dreamt about forming a band, or becoming a popstar etc etc. But now I feel very happy as I achieved my dreams.
TOMOMI: I love kids, I really thought of becoming a kindergarten teacher! (Laugh)
Core thoughts about creating/composing/producing BABY ACTION ?
HARUNA: The concept of the album actually somehow came from shirts, everyone should've realised our changes in clothings. This is our third album, of course we hope that we can strife for our fifth album! We also hope that our dance can be more integrated, our actions can be more perfected. On the other side, we hope we can compose better and even better songs for people that listen to our song and people that come to watch our live performance. We will be hardworking and hope for the best!
So... What's the amount of unreleased songs from SCANDAL?
MAMI: Released songs from our albums and our privately made songs... Woah, that's really uncountable! Because we eliminated a lot of songs while composing them halfway...
About your composing habits, which usually comes first? Lyrics or rhythm?
MAMI: Japanese people usually start with lyrics, but we always have rhythm first!
MAMI: Recently, I like to listen to Abe Mao. I feel like she's a very strong person, awesome solo such as guitar. She, with just one guitar, already can tour around the world. She was really cool when she performed on stage for the first time. I really feel like she's very great.
RINA: Favourite band? That would be ユニコーン (Unicorn) ! Hmm, how to put it in words? It's a very manly band, maybe it's because they're all male? The band has Master Okuda Tamio, they're very famous in Japan, the band's ranking is No.6!
HARUNA: It must be ONE OK ROCK!
TOMOMI: I'm listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers recently! (Laugh)
Judging from the angle of girls, when compared with guy band, what's weakness and strength of girls in the ascept of performing on stage and composing music?
RINA: I think that if we compared, both are really handsome and cool, just different style of handsomeness! We also have different type of audiences. Also, girls can write some lyrics that guys can never think of. I think that girls have advantage as main vocalist, a girl must be really charming when she shakes her head and sings on stage!
You all were originally from dance school, what was the reason that triggered your motive to form a band instead of dancing?
RINA: About dancing and composing music... We thought of forming this band because our dance teacher asked us whether we have the interest to learn musical instruments. We were actually quite new for both dancing and music. Eventually, we found out that composing music and singing are really fun to do, especially having chemistry between each other and creating songs together! And so then, we slowly shifted our main focus to music and band.
Do you all bring lucky charm whenever there's concert?
HARUNA: We don't bring it with us! But before we depart for concert, we will knock our car engine and our backs 2 times. This is a traditional practice in Japan that carries the meaning of "safe trip". After that, we will begin to move. We will also go to temple/shrine to shake bells. Before we start to perform, we will also shout "1,2,3, gambatte!" In Japan, this represents smooth going, safe and blessed!
During private occasion, what you people usually wear?
MAMI: We love western clothes. Most likely that everyone has the impression that we are visual type rockers. We like accessories. The clothings we use this time is actually alike to us! For example, I usually wear loose clothes and match it with boots.
RINA: I actually like to wear skirts!
HARUNA: As for me... I love black clothings!
TOMOMI: I like to wear hat and skirt with laces! (Laugh)
Describe yourselves at home!
MAMI: Basically when I reach home, I can't really move because I'm usually tired. I've set myself a rule to clean up every 3 days. As for the rest of the days, we are usually tired that we don't really feel like doing it... (Laugh)
RINA: I'm almost the same as HARUNA! We usually have indoor activies, such as reading books, watching DVD. Sometimes I will also compose lyrics at home!
TOMOMI: When I'm at home I always want it to have some sound, so I will turn on the television, or play some CD to listen, or sleep!
One of the SCANDAL's characteristics is High School Girls Rock Band. Any plan to change the style of this band?
HARUNA: Shirts are like uniform. For this time, we showed more our own personalities, we also changed style for some songs. We are more matured like women now compared with last time.
Lastly, anything to say to SCANDAL after ten years?
HARUNA: Ah~ I wish everything will go smoothly for you all!
