I'd recommend one of my fave movies: Pan's Labyrinth.
It's like an adult and darker version of Narnia. It's a Mexican-Spanish fantasy movie.

I happen to be quite a big fan of that one myself. It's been a favourite from the very moment I saw it.

Here are a few of my own personal favourites:

A Brighter Summer Day (Taiwan)
The 400 Blows (France)
The Double Life of Veronique (France/Poland)
La Dolce Vita (Italy)
L'avventura (Italy)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (Czechoslovakia)
Persona (Sweden)
Yi Yi (Taiwan)
In the Mood for Love (Hong Kong)
Three Colors Trilogy (France)

I've extensively collected films off the Criterion Collection and I happen to be rather well-versed with the films I watch to a point I've only grown pickier. Tongue

Mohican Comes Home (Mohikan Kokyo ni Kaeru / モヒカン故郷に帰る) is a quirky Japanese film about a punk rocker failing to make a living in Tokyo with his girlfriend returning to his home in the boondocks to care for his dying dad. Funny and poignant at the same time.

Highly recommended!

Trailer:

PS: If you are an AKB48 fan, Maeda Atsuko's in it.
