I'm huge Final Fantasy fan, been playing it since I was 7 years old.

I didn't really like this trailer until the ending. I looks good, sure. But I'm always dissapointed when companies only show tech demos. So damn boring.

Didn't get anything from Versus either.

im more excited by the possibilities of what is shown. sure it wouldve been cool if they had a real game but that isnt the point of this. to each his own i guess. the tech behind games is really interesting to me as much as playing them. i admire the craftsmanship and respect the hard work behind them. thats where my enthusiasm comes from behind this.

anyways, heres another video of them playing with their engine. its pretty cool

The thing is for me though, graphics doesn't matter that much at all. I'm more interested in story/characters even in games and as long as that is good combined with some fun and interesting gameplay like turn based or Strategy (like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics) I'm more than happy. Final Fantasy Tech Demo: Agni's Philosophy 628112

Sure, a good looking game is a plus, but not necessary. But I guess if you are interested in the mechanics of the actual engine and stuff, then I can see why you would find something like a tech demo interesting.

let me put it this way.
you need the proper tools to facilitate creativity. a painter cant paint without the paint brush or the paint. a sculptor cant sculpt without clay. a game designer cant create their stories, design their gameplay, their scenarios without a game engine that will allow them to do what they want.

i didnt say i prefer visuals over gameplay, flash over substance etc etc. i was saying that the possibilities of this tech could bring/has the potential for something amazing which is what i am excited about. a better game engine can facilitate a better game, a better story, a better experience. plus that so called "icing on the cake" called graphics can help sell the game, not in the money sense. it can make the game more immersive more engaging. going back to the video her facial expressions alone already says so much about her pain an struggle more than just saying "shes scared" or "shes hurt." and the thing is that thats what youd be playing, the way this looks isnt going to be a cut-scene thats how the game will normally look like which is exciting.

Yeah, no, it's not that I'd think you are flash over substance or anything. It's true that a new engine is like new tools that they can use to create a game. For me though it does no necessarily mean it's going to be a better one just because they have a new, smooth running engine.

Just take the Final Fantasy franchise for instance. The later games (FFXII, FFXIII and FFXIV) have all been either pretty terrible or outright bland in my opinion. Even with the possibilies there (with new engines), games does not automatically get better. And I'm not saying that's what you think or anything. But that is why for me, an new engine does not matter too much. Because without good writing, story and gameplay I'm just not that interested personally. Happy

dude thats what ive been saying! the potential of this engine is promising and exciting. what they do with it and who uses it is another story.

and to your examples about the other stuff (XII is pretty highly regarded btw, with many saying its the best FF games since the SNES versions), the problem with the others (xiii, ffxiv) is that the games were mismanagement and and were left with an inexperience team and inexperienced directors (which is a general problem now with japanese developers, not just square) . every old final fantasy developers left square before those games were in development. that doesnt mean it was the techs fault.

give a random inexperienced person the highest end camera doesnt mean theyll take good pictures, however the possibilities with that camera is still there. its on the user. and again THAT is the purpose of showing this tech in the first place, to show the potential which is again, for me, is exciting.

But sometimes i go back and play Final Fantasy 7 or 8 to play the old base fighting style of turn based battles. The one i want to see but i dont know if they are stilll doing is Final Fantasy 7 remake?

Yeah, I know the potential is there and it depends on what they do with it. I only meant because a new engine doesn't equal a good game, I don't really care about it. Final Fantasy Tech Demo: Agni's Philosophy 628112

Don't know where you heard XII is highly regarded though. I know Famitsu gave it a really high score but pretty much every fan I've talked to think it's either pretty bland or plain bad. And I've been a member on many FF forums. The forum I'm on the most now everyone thinks the same too about it. I'm not saying you're wrong, just interested since I've heard the opposite pretty much. Final Fantasy Tech Demo: Agni's Philosophy 628112

I hated XII, it had the most boring storyline of a Final Fantasy game yet, and they didn't make any effort to evolve on any of the characters. Vaan and Penelo must have been the two most useless characters in a FF game yet too. It was just "go there to get a new power" basically. Combat system wasn't that engaging either.

Many I've talked to really like XIII for some reason though. I thought it was decent but way too flawed. The combat system played itself until you reached post-game stuff. The villain was so horrible it was sad, the storyline was again pretty bland and unpersonal as was the dialougue for the most part. The game did look gorgeous though.

I don't think Square has made anything great since before they merged with Enix. I don't know if the merge affected them or if it's a coincidence but many feel the same as me. Granted, I have high expectations of a game with FF in the title since they have made such masterpieces in the past. Or I should say I "had" high expectations. They are gone now.

@patstar: I have heard some rumors about a FFX remaster, but I don't think that will happen. Although, we haven't seen or heard much from it so perhaps. HD remakes are usually out pretty fast or at least given a release window but there has been nothing but silence regarding FFX HD.

And as for FFVII remake, I don't think that will happen. People from Square have even gone on record saying there won't be one. But you know, if you have the patience to wait about 20 years then if SE is still around, a remake isn't that unthinkable. When the gaming industri has moved further from this era, I think it could actually happen.

The girl characterter is really pretty. Her design is reminds of when Nomira disnt over design characters.

@shark I don't think you understand what a tech demo is or even the point to why they are showing this. There was actually more things that astoriasky didnt post that the developers said. Like how this will make developement easier for them and will solve the problems they had with making FF13 so hopefully it will be better for them on the future.

From what I figured people who liked 7,8,9,10 didnt like 12, but I grew up with the early Final Fantasies and I loved 12 (but 6 is my favorite). I thought 13 was fun and played well, but the story was bad and it was too linear. Its all personal oppinion though.

@Shark *sigh* this is just becoming a circular back and forth since were both saying essentially the same thing about how games are made, but you keep adding other stuff that wasnt the point of this video in the first place.

and the ffXII thing
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-2/final-fantasy-xii/critic-reviews
whats weird is im not even a fan of FFXII but im defending it because it wasnt a bad game, just not my taste. but i understand why people like it and not disregard their opinion.

also vaan and penelo werent originally in the game in the begging and basch was supposed to be the main character (hence their short sighted character progression). the higher ups said that young people wouldnt relate and forced them to change the story late in the game so so they added vaan and penelo. which is part of the reason why those developers left square.

Oh, I fully understand the point of a tech demo. I've already said why I don't find them interesting. Does not matter to me if the development for SE in the future is easier and it can help solve problems. It's a good sign, sure. But as they are showing something that won't be part of any actual game, we still don't know anything except that they have good technology. That don't impress me personally in the slightest. I only care about playing a good game. They can use the engine from FFIV to make it for all I care. It's just an opinion, nothing more.

My first Final Fantasy was FFVI and I've played all of them and I loved II, IV, V and VI aswell as VII, VIII, IX and X. I still thought XII was bad. It was intended to be an mmo in the early stages of development aswell, and you can tell.

@astoriasky: Yeah, we are going in circles. All I wanted to convey was that I don't personally care for new engines as it is no guarantee for a better game. You just sounded like I accused you of being flash over substance, which I never did. Happy

Just added the stuff about FFXII because many disliked it. Does not matter to me that Penelo and Vaan was not originaly intended. They were still there in the end, and it was distracting. But nevermind that off topic discussion.
