The question just popped into my mind...

Does anyone know how long do the girls practice per day?

I mean, they learned to play at an incredible speed and I was curious to know how hard they worked to do so. Especially Mami.

when they were just starting to play instruments, they spent at least 10 hours depending on their schedule mostly on weekends but i guess maybe an average of 6/7 hours a day. And now that all of them have finished schooling and are focusing on their career, i guess could be a whole day practice or like an average of 8/9 hours

I doubt they have time now to spend 8-9 hours per day practicing. Also they are "good enough" now for what they do so I would guess at this point they are working on things they feel they're weak on or that will really make them sound noticeably better, rather than just general practice. That cuts the time required down by quite a lot.

It seems like at least 50-60% of their days are packed with events. Some of those involve actually playing, and on those days I'd guess they don't otherwise practice at all. On the days without events, they'll have planning meetings, rehearsals and other housekeeping things to do. Those days they probably do have time to actually practice, but I doubt it would be more than a few hours.

They're a professional band now and they've all been playing for more than 5 years at this point, so they're definitely not going to be practicing like they did in the beginning. But I am sure they did do about 8-10 hours per day at first, until they were competent.

Yeah like spacecadet says, nowadays they probably don't really train a lot anymore. They are pros and know their stuff, no reason to train 9 hours like they did at the very beginning.

Their training is mostly rehearsals and learning new songs, I don't see any of them sit down a few hours per day alone and practice alone.

Given their current state as a professional band, I think 4-5 hours of practicing is enough, and this doesn't happen daily. Even a total of 9-10 hours a week of practice seems reasonable. Like Harimato said, their training is mostly rehearsals, and probably new mixes for the live shows. They gotta do something new on the live shows to make it slightly different than the recorded version, right?

And when it's post-live, they maybe have some recreation time for a few days. This is mostly road trips and vacation site visits, and I doubt they even touch their instruments during this time.

"incredible speed" i think that's not completely true....
hehehehe.....

basically for rehearsal i think 2 or 3 hours per day is enough(for all member rehearsal).
but, i guess as for artist or musician every member must be practice lonely. more than 3 hours per day is reasonable for me.....

Guys, you are supposing that they practiced 8/10 hours a day at the beginning of the band or any of the girls mentioned this before?

On weekends maybe even practiced more than 10 hours, it is perfectly possible. But on other days, having to go to school, study and practice even this amount of hours it's hard to believe. Schools in Japan are not rigorous? Or maybe they don't sleep. hehe

PS. Sorry for the awful english, writing this with help of the google translator.

Pretty sure I did read this somewhere a long time ago, but I couldn't tell you where at this point, so I guess you can consider it hearsay. The girls all do often talk about how much time and effort it was in the beginning, and how hard it was. But there's really no way they could have gotten as good as they got that quickly *without* that much time put in. They've all said they had never picked up the instruments they're playing now before they started the band.

It's not so unusual either. If they were a different type of band (like a punk band), they may not have needed that much practice, but they play some intricate patterns and they all sing and play at the same time. And they learned to do that from nothing well enough to play live and record an EP in about 18 months. That had to require a crash course in practicing. Most guitarists, bassists and drummers that play in bands like them have practiced for several hours a day for years before being ready to play professionally.

For me just knowing that you read somewhere it's ok.

I feel that they really did not start from scratch. They were already singing lessons (in caless right?) when they met each other. Rina is playing piano since age of 3, Mami play drums before Scandal and Tomomi tried guitar before bass. Is clear that sing, play and sing at the same time are different things. I know that piano is different from drums and drums is different from guitar. But anyway they already had a base when they started Scandal.

Do not get me wrong guys, I'm not disparaging them, just seem to me that this thing to start completely from zero is not 100% true.
But they really progressed very very fast and are an inspiration to many people, including me, when I begin to make my drum lessons.

Maybe not a "incredible speed"
But... they got success in such a short time(in the way of rock band).

Take my other favorite band for example:
1.Avenged Sevenfold: They play music since 13.14years old,and then they formed in 1999 but was being known by 2006(now they all are more than 30 years old)

2.Black veil Brides: As their guitarist said:I have played guitar 13 years(he's now 27 or 28) and they got famous in 2008-2011

You realized?

Scandal ! What I love them? I used to listen to the metalcore and glam metal! Because they touched me!

They play instrument at about 18 years old(Haru , Rina san might be 15)
And they work hard!
The most important thing is they got famous in short time and all the world knew them...

Needless to say they ROCK! RULE!

Sorry for my suck English..
But I think you guys can understand.

anyway the fact start 0 not 100% correct, and had a base or at least the ear in order to become great. Cool Walk

Okay, out of boredom I'm dragging old threads into the present. There may be nothing new to say here, but new SH members might enjoy the discussion or add something.

So, SCANDAL undoubtedly practiced a lot when just starting out. Still, there's that old debate about innate talent versus Malcom Gladwell's contention anyone can master anything if you practice 10,000 hours. I don't know the answer, but I think like most things it's in the middle. Anyone can get better through practice (and surprise themselves!) but it does seem like the SCANDAL members had/have more talent than the average person. They got a bit lucky in that there was no weak player in the group even though they had nothing to go by in the beginning to be able to tell.

Thanks for digging up the dead. Happy

The amount of hours they spent early on never surprised me since so many other great musicians I admire put in equal if not more hours when they were younger and developing their talent (ie. Eric Clapton, Steve Vai).  What did surprise me is how much they still practice while on tour.  Both the HELLO WORLD and TEMPTATION BOX TOUR documentaries gave me the impression they run through their whole set during sound check as opposed to playing a few songs or going over some parts.

Every band is different for what works well for them, and this seems like overkill to me, but I have a lot of admiration for Scandal for having this level of dedication to themselves and their fans to have the best live experience possible.

I also got the impression from old interviews that they didn't sleep too many hours when they were in school practicing, mostly to and from school or home.  This seems logical considering the amount of time they put into both school and practice.  I think Haruna once mentioned she was glad she only had to do this for one year of high school, and she lucked out by getting a job were she could fall asleep at work but the other girls had to stay awake in class.  How they physically managed all this at that age, I don't know but I'm very impressed.  I slept through a lot of classes in high school and my bands only practiced a few hours a week.

Don't be suprise here guys. I think I would call their dedication "Japanese Level" lol. Don't you think it's kind of destiny that the four of them met and form a band and up to this day still put everything they have to make their performance a joy to watch. There're some band who after tasting success seems to have lost the passion and just make music just for the money. Scandal isn't one thankfully. And to think that it's not even their dream to begin with.

I have really enjoyed watching SCANDAL grow as musicians since 2006, being a bass player myself and being Tomomi is my favourite member I have watched her the most and I think she is pretty damn good now Happy

I played in many local bands and the only time we would would practise is when we had a new song or a new guitar, when you are playing the same songs all the time you dont really need to practise.

One reviewer at their 2008 Sakuracon performance said this about them, "I asked them what their musical backgrounds were before starting the band. Given the quality of their performance, I expected that they had studied music for many years. Instead, they said that the band had just started a year and a half ago. At first I thought there was a translation problem, or that they had misunderstood the question. I asked again to clarify and got the same reply. Confused, I said to the translator, "Are they really saying they hadn't ever played an instrument before a year and a half ago? How can that be? They are so good." He said, "Yes, that's right. It surprised me too." Even considering that they practice for hours every day, it is still kind of hard to believe."

I wouldn't call that practice, I'd call that rehearsal. It's pretty common for any band to play through several songs at any new venue, to make sure the sound is right and everyone knows their cues. I doubt they did the whole set because that's just a lot of time, but they probably did several whole songs and any parts of other songs that would potentially sound different depending on the settings on the mixing board and the particular venue.

The difference between practice and rehearsal is that practice is for yourself, rehearsal is for everyone (including those controlling the lights and mixing board). I doubt they practice all that much at all anymore, after more than 10 years of playing. I personally don't see a lot of difference in their playing over the past few years - I think they've about peaked in terms of technical ability. But they rehearse and play enough that they maintain their current level of ability and probably just naturally get a tiny bit better over time. And I'm sure they do warmup exercises and stuff like that that's not much different than actually practicing, but the difference is you don't think about it much when it's just for warmup. You just do it instinctively. You see this when they're in the green room sometimes and walking around with their instruments, doing various exercises even while they talk to and laugh with each other.

The girls play, in technical terms, at an average difficultie, even now. They're not virtuosso players or anithing like that. As far as I know, they start rehearsing for tour or special shows (like the ones recorded to DVD and such) a couple of weeks before the event. Then, they're on the road, as most bands. For the big shows, a big part of rehearsals its about what they do on stage (when to dance, where to stand during eachs songs). 4/5 hours per day should be enough for that. I don't think they spend hours and hours practicing technique to play like Dream Theather.

About they learning curve on the early days, yes, they got from almost 0 to 7 in like one year. Pretty fast. But we should consider the following:

- Mami played drums already.
- Rina plays piano and developed serious musical skills since she was a kid. Although that, when she started played drums, it was very difficult for her and even tried to left the band because of the frustration (now she has the best technicall skills among the 4, at least to me)
- Tomomi is very skillful and a really fast learner, according to the other member's declarations.

Another point I would like to talk about is the following: they weren't THAT good during the first 2 albums. The shows were awesome, and they played great, but on the records there are lots of parts I would bet that were played by other musicians (The guitar lick in the middle of Hitotsu Dake its a clear example)

They come from a music/dance school so practicing is part of they had to do there...

There are plenty of videos on Youtube of their live presentations in different years and you can see in them how much better they've become, but I think it's a little hard to judge their technical level since their songs don't really push them too far.

Still, I don't think they could perform something like Take Me Out 6 years ago or so and I hope they keep challenging themselves with more songs like that.
