Scandal - How Much Longer?

So I found out about the SCANDAL MANIA TOUR 2019 on the Tokyo Hive website. Haru's quote below really got me thinking:

"Thankfully, we were able to reach 10 years. It feels long, yet short because we've worked so hard. For both myself and the members, the past 10 years have been fulfilling and memorable. We've ran in full force up until now, but we know that in life, everything has an end. That is why we will live frantically, and we will continue to do whatever we can.

Obviously, I'm still a new fan trying to catch up with the amazing history that is Scandal, but I always wonder how much longer they will be around. They seem to work A LOT! It almost seems non stop...or rather, with little breaks here and there. I feel bummed just thinking how late I discovered them. I obviously I will love whatever time I have to fan girl over them, but I have thought about it.

Does anyone else ever think about this? How much longer they'll be together? Have they ever given hints- in their later years, in interviews and such regarding this?

I feel like there have been threads about this subject before, but I don't feel like tracking them down.

Anyway, I personally interpreted and translated that quote from HARU a little differently where there's definitely less of a tone of finality to it:

We progressed up until this point with a great momentum, and we know that, just like life, there are beginnings as well as endings. That's exactly why we want to keep living as hard as we can now, and do as much as we can.

https://www.scandal-heaven.com/t14486-natalie-scandal-s-kanshasai-tour-kicks-off#760277

IMO, what HARU said just means that since everything in life comes to an end at some point, they're going to make the best of it and do as many things as they can. That sounds to me like they do plan on sticking around for a long, long time.

They've mentioned this several times over the years in interviews (can't remember any specific ones, but they're somewhere in this subforum) that they want to continue to be a band for at least as long as the current record of the longest-running all-female band: 17 years. So that's another 5 years guaranteed. But they've also said how they still want to be a band even when they're old ladies. They also mention often how well they all get along and hardly ever fight/quarrel.

So yeah, I'd say that they're still going to be around for a long time.

@Scandal_Feedback
I also remember a specific thread with that topic or a conversation under a thread (so potentially, they may be multiple talks about this in different parts of the forum). And sorry, I also don't feel like tracking them for you. I'm feeling lazy today. LoL
.dance.
Anyway, I took part on one and I remember that we also discussed the possibility of them breaking up if one or all form their own families. If I remember right, everyone in that thread/conversation agreed that SCANDAL will be around for a long time. Knowing each of the members' personality and their relationship with each other and the fact that their music is getting even stronger, I am confident we'll still be listening to a new SCANDAL song 10 years from now.

Scandal aren't even allowed to take an extended hiatus until I've seen them live. If they do, I'll... well, have you seen the movie 'Misery'?

I think the band will still be very active for many years, but I'm more worried about the slowdown of releases of albums / single / DVD compared to other comparable artists.
Their record company doesn't seem very motivated for some time...

Even if they should all be having kids I don't think that would slow down their creativity & new releases If anything it would probably bring out new sides of them! After all Haru said long ago that they would certainly change their approach as they got older. The bottleneck is gonna be live performances. And that's where they're at their best and happiest (and where most of the money is made to support them and their team). It's a crippler that they can't sell everywhere through Amazon, Spotify and so on or have a full presence on YouTube.. I'd like to wring the necks of whoever is responsible for that.. whoops sorry not supposed to talk this way...

I think the thread people are remembering was actually about something else but went a bit OT... which is why no one can find it. I believe it was actually about the Haruna photo book. I remember writing a somewhat long reply there about how they're going to stay around for a long time.

To reiterate, if the band is getting along and sees no reason to break up, then I don't see why they can't go on forever.

That's a different question from how much support they'll get from their record label or others in the music business who they need to actually make a living doing it. There are really only a handful of bands in the entire world that got big enough in their early years to still make a living for both themselves and their staff, and pay their label and promoters, once the initial novelty wore off.

So I kind of expect them to slow down, do some other things, start families and maybe even other careers at some point. But as long as they all still want to be part of Scandal, I don't see why they can't get together and do some shows or put out an album even 20 years from now. So I think the quantity of their output will change and you'll see them branching out more. But they'll always be Scandal.

The question has been brought up many times in interviews recently.

At all 4 Kansahsai live so far.

There is a "serious" MC part, Haruna speaks and the remaining members have glazed eyes, Haruna talks about thanking for all 10 years and eventually the inevitable will happen for various reason, but in the mean time they will continue as long as they can and thanks everyone for it.

Radio Cassette MC
Was edited out, but Haruna mentions similar thing, but the MC jokes to Haruna if she had anything to announce.

Ground Y! talk, similar topic was brought up again with similar talk/answers.

So this topic has come up a lot recently during various interviews.

Is there any reason why Haruna seems rather pessimistic (maybe it's just an impression) on the band's future? As you live in Japan, what is their popularity today?

This Tuesday i learned that Lovebites is signed by Nuclearblast record label.
Getting a deal like that would grant Scandal a great opportunity in Europe and since Scandal are around a lot longer than Lovebites, I have high hopes they will live on for a long time to come.

Yes, but Scandal will never be signed by Nuclear Blast. They are not at all a heavy metal band. We can only hope for better international support from Sony Music Japan (Epic Record) ... by starting to make the band available again on iTunes and Spotify

She doesn't sound pessimistic to me.

Once a band/artist has been around for a while, they seem to inevitably get a bunch of questions asked to them about how much longer they think they'll be around for. The band has definitely reached that stage since they just reached the 10th anniversary of their major label debut. Also, one of the members is now in their 30s, which is usually a huge turning point in most people's lives.

IMO, by the band constantly mentioning it now, it's more like they want to keep things realistic for themselves and their fans. They want to remind everyone that nothing lasts "forever." That's just reality, unfortunately. But, they want to keep doing what they're doing for as long as they can. They simply want to assure everyone of that.

Something like that. That's the kind of vibe I'm getting anyway.

Technically, SCANDAL has been "signed" to British record label JPU Records since 2015; AKA they repackage and distribute SCANDAL's releases to Europe. This honestly doesn't seem to have made much of a difference in any way (unless you count their music being more readily available in parts of Europe + the two times they've toured Europe?), nor does this seem to help in their longevity...

I agree with Jade. Personally, I think we, the fans, are expecting and maybe unconsciously demanding them to stay as a band for a long time that they are pressured to say "Hey, we will do our best do that but anything can happen that MIGHT break up the band. Change is constant but we will do what we can while we can as a band."

It sounds like a foreshadowing, yes, but it's better for them and for us to be realistic rather than to raise our hopes high only to be let down by a false promise usually committed by other bands.

So if you ask how popular is Scandal, I would say only a minority of Japanese would know who they are.

Scandal also regularly gets compared with Silent Siren.

For the curious, here's the last five years of Google Trends for SCANDAL vs. Silent Siren and Band Maid (worldwide). Trends is a relative measure of search "interest."

That is part of the reason why we never seen picture of Rina and Hinanchu together after 2015. I don't know what the management of Sai Sai is thinking, but the fans of the 2 bands are very different.
