RINA's "Fuzzy" Lyrics Essay
Uta-Net - RINA's "Fuzzy" Lyrics Essay HJVSo7q
Uta-Net - RINA's "Fuzzy" Lyrics Essay PAfKsXp

It was the first time I felt an ending would be coming in the future.

SCANDAL released their digital single 「Fuzzy」 on August 7th. This work is a bittersweet summer love song with vague feelings that cannot be expressed in words. When the lyrics were released early on Uta-Net on August 2nd, the number of accesses increased in a blink of an eye, and it brilliantly reigned as leader of the following day's 【Attention Ranking】 chart.

Now, today's song column introduces a new song of theirs that garnered attention even before its release. We asked RINA of SCANDAL, who wrote the lyrics, to write an essay about the lyrics. Memories from when she was a child. Current feelings from growing up. And, a will towards the future. Please take in the varied "important points" included in this song along with its lyrics!

~「Fuzzy」 Lyrics Essay~

There are times where an inevitable ending that will come someday, comes to mind. Rather than abandoning or abjecting something, just keep being positive. Before you know it, you'll start accepting that everything has an end. The good and bad things that happen to you make up your long life.

Summer of sixth grade. The school I was attending at the time was a so-called mammoth-sized school. Since children from all over town went there, the number of available classrooms gradually ran out. My class had to learn in a prefab hub in front of the gymnasium until the school building expansion was complete. There were also classmates that seemed tired and frustrated from having to keep making roundtrips from a classroom they were used to using, and having to move their desks and textbooks. However, I was happy with how it felt kind of special. (We were also lucky to have a new air conditioner!)

Test day in the temporary school building. In a quiet classroom with serious atmosphere to it that was unlike our normal classes, I suddenly looked away from the answer sheet and glanced around at the classroom for a few seconds from my seat. I heard the sounds of everyone aside from me staring at their answer sheets and sliding their pencils along. At that time, I thought for some reason, "Why can't all of us here just stay together forever?"

As far as I remember, that day was the first time I felt an ending would be coming in the future.

Now that I've grown up, things like love, work, and friendship will probably be repeated several times before I die. During that time, I believe there are things that will continue on even if they're interrupted, as well as memories that'll never be revisited again.

"Let's stay together forever" isn't more of a ephemeral rule than a verbal promise. There's the danger of not knowing what'll happen, so the moment when it seems like "I want to keep staying by your side forever" can feel more romantic. That's why the present is precious. Anxiety is needed in everyday life. I hope you can fall in love while keeping a little bit of sadness in your heart, and can keep loving music and the present.

The band will celebrate its 13th anniversary on August 21st. We've had all sorts of eras during this short time, and we've been continuing to play music in various styles to suit our ages and moods, so I think that,  to the public, we're a band that holds various images.

"Fuzzy" in Japanese is "aimai (曖昧; vague, ambiguous)." I think we were able to write a song that's the best match for who we are now, and a love song that is the most fresh and humane in SCANDAL's history. Although we honestly don't know how we'll walk forwards from here, nor what will happen, I want to always connect the irreplaceable present with the four of us.

It's interesting to see that the band don't know how to move forwards from now.

As Rina says, the inevitable ending will always come, and I would be feel so sad if the band would disband but happy for them at the same time. They've accomplished so much in these years and I'm really proud of them. Let's see what the future holds for this wonderful and lovely band.

I didn't get the impression she was talking about the band coming to an end, but rather relationships throughout one's life.

Of course the band is a relationship, but she says they continue to change themselves to fit their mood and age.  If anything, as a band they are working together to overcome whatever comes before them; whereas in a general relationship there may be someone not willing to budge on their position or willing to concede to the other to find a comfortable/acceptable middle ground for all parties.

There is a romanticism in saying to a partner, "Let's stay together forever," and it seems really nice, but reality doesn't care about your romance.  It will present challenges to your wishful sentiments.  I like the observation Rina has made in this respect.

They are young women now, not kids any more and you start to think about things like that.

I think Rina is also referring to the band itself thinking that some time in the future, sooner or later, the band will be nothing but beautiful memories. I like her way of handling the thought, staying positive and living the moment.
