The sound of these four girls’ instruments is stuck in the space between their shaken audience. Guitarists HARUNA (23) and MAMI (21),bassist TOMOMI (21),and drummer RINA (20) are the members of the girls rock band「SCANDAL」.Just after starting to learn their instruments, their Indie days ended with their major debut in 2008, breaking out with a tie in song for a popular animation. On the 28th of March,they will be holding a solo live in the “Holy Land” of rock bands, the Nippon Budokan. We talked about their thoughts of everything up until this point, and the dreams they’ll hold hereafter.
■「It hasn’t hit me yet」「I’m looking forward to it」
「Can we really do it? I thought. Although she’s the oldest member, HARUNA the decision to do the Nippon Budokan live took her by surprise.「We were always performing at live houses, and even though we had just finished last year’s hall tour, isn’t it a good thing that we’ve made it this far?」says ＭＡＭＩ.「It doesn’t feel real yet, but as we get closer to the real thing and begin rehearsals, I wonder if I’ll become more excited」
They’ve done rock festivals and similar events, but SCANDAL have not yet played at Budokan.「We’ve heard from people who have played there, it feels like the audience is very close to the stage, so I’m looking forward to it」says TOMOMI. RINA also has strong feelings about looking out from the stage「For bands, this is the place we dream of. We hold on to our beliefs and our pride because we want to stand there」.
With the four of them going back and forth between their dance and vocal schools about five years ago, after starting to play instruments after being introduced at school, they formed a band. At first they weren’t very skilled but after a lot of practice, while holding street lives at a park near Osaka Jou Hall, they improved.
「We also had times where we worried about what was the best thing to do. Like you’re a band so if
you only do band things, you’ll get tied down」says MAMI.Things are different now. 「We will do things that other bands can’t do.That’s why we’ll do it」says RINA, who at last year’s hall tour, performed a skit during their break that was enjoyed by the audience.「Even though it’s Budokan I’m planning some more」says RINA.We can only hope.
They sang the opening 「少女S」 for TV anime「BLEACH, the ending for「STAR DRIVE Kagayaki no Takuto」,「Pride」; SCANDAL is well known among anime fans.「HARUKAZE」, to be released on the 22nd of February, will also be used as the opening for「BLEACH」,is a song that is filled with drive. On March 7th they are also releasing a best album. The topics are never-ending.
■We want to become a band that’s seen as a benchmark
With regards to the Nippon Budokan, SCANDAL has finally taken a big step forward as a band, but they have an endless number of dreams.「We want to make the kinds of songs that everyone covers」says TOMOMI.They swear to become the kind of band that’s seen as a landmark.「It’s because it’s the four of us that this has come about」RINA says, adding「I want to continue with the members for at least another ten years. Can SCANDAL really play their own instruments? When people ask this, I can say ‘It’s the real thing’, and continuing with the band is the only way we can prove this」.
「We’ve received encouragement from a lot of things, if even from each other 」MAMI adds. And so,「We want to perform at Osaka Jou Hall」says HARUNA. 「When we were doing our street lives, we could see the hall close by, and we made a promise」.Their Budokan tickets have been reserved so they have become incredibly popular. It seems like their dreams and their time to dream is not yet at an end.
