Hey peeps… I did a search on the forum before asking this, and came up with nothing so hopefully no-one tells me off for starting a new topic…

What I really wanna know is what other sort of music out there that's like Scandal?
Onion huh?

I have listened to a few groups already:
Chatmonchy, negoto, tricot which are all very similar to me, but a bit too "alternative" for my taste.
Stereopony (which I really liked), which lead me to nothing, because they were good, it's too bad they disbanded.
Gacharic Spin & Doll$Boxx, which are obviously very different to Scandal, but I enjoy them a lot (love the drummer, especially when she get's that double-kick going, and you hear the bassist keeping up with her). Which lead me to Band-Maid, but that's too metal for me.
LoVendoR isn't too bad either, but they don't seem to have much.

I actually don't have anything against male J-bands, I just haven't found anything yet. So, any suggestions for that as well, I'm all ears.

how about FLiP? They're a bit more edgier than Scandal, but they do make some songs that sounds like something Scandal would make. Plus they're good friends with the band.≧∇≦ Searching them up can be hard,  so best bet is to Google Search them,  spell it the same way I spelled it and put "Japanese band" after it.  You can look up live performances on them on YouTube.

For male bands, how about One OK Rock? They super popular especially overseas, so it's easy searching them up.  They have an alternative, punk, hard rock,  nu metal, post punk sound,  and they have a mix of English and Japanese lyrics,  one more than the other.  So if you're okay with that than go for it Happy

Did you try Silent Siren ? It's the second japanese band I discover and I'm addicted. I would say they have a cute image and they can rock (some of their song are heavier than Scandal's imo) !

I would recommand Maon Kurosaki as well, a female singer

I listen to LoVendoR and they're also great but indeed, they just have 2 mini albums for the moment (very catchy by the way ^^). Band-Maid is an awesome band (big crush on them) but yes, for those who prefer more pop-rock, it's not the good band haha.

Also, same as you, I didn't find a good male j-band yet. Well, I listen to Maximum the Hormone, but they have a badass female drummer, so it's not a full male band.

@Star-World69, FLiP - yep, I do like their style indeed! Added to the list. As for One OK Rock, I have to admit they remind me too much of old Linkin Park, and other music I listened to around the early 2000's, I have to admit I've moved on from that sort of stuff.

@darksider, Wow. those two Silent Siren songs you linked are like almost opposite of each other. The first one I really like, but the second one is borderline kawaii-pop. Strange how contrasting they are. I think I could like them though, added to my list, but it sucks I can't seem to find them on any digital distributors. As for Maon, I dunno, she's not really doing it for me?

@noodles, I don't know why I don't like Band-Maid, especially considering I like Doll$Boxx. Maybe I have something against maid outfits? lol. Perhaps I'll come back to them in 6 months and think they're alright.

I guess for me, J-Pop/Rock is all about enjoying the style of music, cos there is no way I'm ever going to understand the lyrics anytime soon.

Someone was discussing some other male bands they were listening to in the other topic a few days ago… I guess I'll see if I can find that again, cos I was going to take a listen.

I personally dont like the Maid thing but I think the music is top notch.

I hate to say this because there are a lot of Japanese bands that I adore (a lot of which are mentioned in this very thread) but I still feel like Scandal really are a one-of-a-kind band in that their music is so diverse as opposed to most other bands/artists whose sound is more focused and less all-over-the-place.

Anyway, here are a few more:

Yasuha Kominami

Shishamo

Nagisa Kuroki

Marie Ueda

Amelie ... where did I see this, was it you Noodles? The lead singer reminds me a bit of Mami, if she were to open up a bit as a singer. Anyway, I like them, I see they only just brought out a full album so that's kinda tempting to get as well.

Anyway, I listened some more last night before bed, and did stumble across [Alexandros]... did they have a name change? A lot of English lyrics really seems funny, but they're pretty good.

I'll look at the other stuff tonight.

@Noodles - sorry for confusing you with the "like Scandal" part, but flyingwill explains  very well why there isn't anything quite like Scandal...

@flyingwill - you make a good point, Scandal are definitely more diverse than all the other bands put together! I guess that's why we all like them and we all have our own tastes on what we like most about them, which makes us a diverse bunch of guys and girls as well.

Yes! both The Oral Cigarettes and Gesu no Kiwami tome are awesome!
Love the rocky sound of TOC, and the nice jazzy sound of Gesuno.
Thanks for those, Noodles, you the man… I assume that's Gesuno in your signature?
Finally have some male vocals I can enjoy : )

Flyingwill - Shishamo is nice, like negoto; and Marie Ueda has a very cute voice, will check them out, thanks : )

When I first listened to Silent Siren, it was the "Love no shirushi" song. I didn't really like it so I didn't look at their other songs. Couple weeks later, I tried again and I got addicted (and I really like that song too now).

For me, enjoying the style of music isn't limited to Jmusic, but music in general. I learn japanese but I have been learning english longer and I still don't try to understand lyrics in songs (even if I understand most of contents I watch raw). For western music, I listen to metal so I prefer paying attention to the riffs.

Don't worry, if you don't like Maon that's fine, we all have different tastes in music. I forgot to mention a band : The Sketchbook. They disbanded but it's pop/rock and they have 2 mini albums I think.

Try out The SxPlay.

Not as successful or well known as some of the other bands (apparently some drama between the lead singer and the label she used to be part of, or something), but they have a few pretty solid songs on Youtube.

Such a shame they disbanded   .wew. I liked The Sketchbook a lot too Sad

More bands:

I discovered all these bands (Fear and loathing didnt play at the venue but a japanese friend of mine recommended them) at the Band-maid live in Shinjuku Japan

Thanks guys for all your suggestions : ) And thanks @alrick for the other thread, cheers! I've got enough now to last me a while : D

I guess I should have said this earlier, but for me, I spent a good 10+ years in love with Jamiroquai, with their acid jazz/funk style (which is now more disco-funk with recent albums, but still pretty good). So, when I heard Gesu no Kiwame otome, I immediately liked it. Yes, the vocals are completely different to Jay Kay's, but the music (bass playing over top of the guitar, lots going on with the instruments, and a bit of syncopation) is what I like.

In saying that, I still listened to all your typical rock and metal like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Greenday, Creed (lol), RATM, and Incubus - that third song of Oral Cigarettes you linked Noodles reminds me of Incubus a lot. I guess my listening tastes have mellowed out a lot though.

Special Thanks guys for sharing SpecialThanks with me. That happy-punk sound and the Engrish is unrestrained cuteness personified. If they didn't have the words on screen I wouldn't understand much at all, but Misaki's voice sounds surprisingly clear regardless.

Oh, Draft King is actually a good choice, especially since the OP mentioned liking Stereopony.

Draft King consists of Erika (vocals) and three former members of Stereopony: Nohana (bass), Shiho (drums), and Mao (did studio/support guitar work and is present in the video for Stand by Me).

Similar sounding I guess, as I don't care if it's a guy or girl or mixed band. As flyingwill pointed out though, they have a lot of diverse tracks, so depending on one's particular favourite tracks, that can range in style greatly! I like the happy punk/rock sound that Scandal make - Standard is maybe my favourite album in that regard. Awanaitsumorino Genkidene is probably my favourite track, with Honn wo Yomu a close second because Mami.

I hope this helps:

Zone:
Probably its somewhat late to get into Zone now as they disbanded in 2005 March. For many people the question was: are there any similar groups to Zone? Scandal is similar and different at the same time. But definitely Zone is on the side of happy rock and roll. They are all time classics and should never be forgotten. Happy

Buono!: This year they are back! Their supporting band is an all girl band. The songs are great, most of them are happy rock 'n' roll. For me they are on the same level as Zone.

Mongol800: Three guys from Okinawa. They have some happy punk rock songs for sure. Chisana koi no uta is an all time favorite. One of the best Japanese songs indeed. Happy

Judy and Mary was one of the pioneers of the Japanese alternative rock scene. That cutting edge band existed at the time Visual Kei was really popular in Japan.
