They had a third round of the guitars out a few months ago (there is a thread for the official Squier SCANDAL guitars on SH). Looking at the major retailers in Japan online, it appears they have all sold out. If you were looking at Amazon JP then it should be ok as the marketplace tends to be occupied by legit stores (you can check anyway).

Some stores in Asia (HK, S Korea etc) do sell 'em in very limited quantities (each release is pretty much limited in the first place - like a hundred copies per run).

So, it looks like you gotta find one on the second hand/resale market. There are a few on Yahoo! Auctions Japan if you check often enough.

From the guitar stores I've visited occasionally I still see Haruna's guitar on display.

This was in Shibuya/Shinjuku in Tokyo, so for those interested, they should have the stores check their inventory. Timo's bass were the first to be sold out at the last reissue.

But if you look online like rakuten, you can see all 3 squire guitars are still widely available.

When responding to deathclown's query, the only store that 'had' the Stratomaster was one of the Ishibashi branches in Tokyo but it was on hold for another customer.

I did look on Rakuten but the global site - there's a few Skullsilvers knocking about but not the other two.

After seeing the current ish of SOUND DESIGNER, I think it's somewhat safe to say that the Tele is MAMI's as it is parked in her home studio, together with her old "Sticker" Fender Strat.

Also, I think basically everyone missed it, but the Lake Placid Blue Tele actually made a brief appearance in the SCAFES guide videos last year, so at that point it probably would have been safe to assume that MAMI does in fact own it. Tongue

I actually have seen that 62 Tele online too.

Being a geek, though - I have to beg to differ. The 62 has the spaghetti Fender font but only has TELECASTER in quotes.

MAMI's has an additional line beneath the TELECASTER which has the three design patent numbers, and the AVRI 64 Telecaster has that.

I am prepared to stand corrected of course. Grin

It appears to be a Marshall Astoria Dual amp.

They always bring their own gear for their live tours in Japan, so I wonder if MAMI's got herself a new amp setup. Watch this space, I guess.

Yes, that old style sports car look color scheme is pretty eye catching.
Well, for venues with capacity of few hundreds, it makes sense they tour with slimline amps set up this time.
You will also find Haruna is not bringing her EVH III set along as well. No earbleed of those in the front row haha!
It is possible that Marshal ask Mami to give the Astoria a try. When you are famous enough, you get gear for free/to try out.

They've done live house tours before and that never stopped the band lugging their usual gear, but I guess 53 venues until July is a lot of lugging.

The Astoria's pretty high end - hand-wired, sounds lovely and costs a bomb (MAMI's Astoria Dual head in the photos at Kumamoto retails at GBP1999 and the 1x12" cab is GBP450 here in the UK).

This Sept's issue of GiGS has the lowdown on the band's live gear at SCABEST47.

Guitar-wise, MAMI used her usual Strat and her Pelham Blue Gibson Les Paul.

MAMI'S GEAR - Page 6 MAMIastoriadual

The Marshall Astoria (Astria[sic]) Dual amp. MAMI utilises the Astoria as her main amp on the tour when she is not able to use her usual JCM2000 head/cab, and due to the Astoria's dual-channel spec, she gets both her clean and dirty guitar tones from the amp. For the larger venues, MAMI would use the JCM2000 head and 4x12" cab. [Thanks to astuffds for making sense of the kanji!]

MAMI's pedals were almost as it was in 2016, but she placed her BOSS Dynamic Wah where her ZVEX Fuzz Probe was (not necessarily the order in the signal chain though). Where her Dynamic Wah used to be is a Katana Sound distortion pedal (in blue casing):

Did some detective work on Katana Sound 「カタナサウンド」 - M. Takaki is a boutique effects pedal maker which has been around since 2003. Interestingly, he made his pedals for the US market, and only began to sell them in Japan in 2006.

Although the mag describes MAMI's Katana Sound as a distortion pedal, but Katana seems to just make overdrive and fuzz pedals. Perhaps with her being a fuzz nut, she might have gotten the Raging Wave fuzz, but I'm merely speculating. Nevertheless, with this being a boutique pedal and as MAMI's pedal looks a bit tatty, I won't be surprised if the blue casing is a variant or a replacement. Reminds me of her rare-as-hen's-teeth boutique Krishna distortion pedal!

MAMI's new Fender Strat is featured in the latest Go!Go!GUITAR Dec 2017 ish, but I wish she'd say more about it. Unfortunately, I had to go thru Google Translate for this and all I can gather is that the colour is a Vintage Cherry Red (and the grain of the wood is visible through the finish), and the guitar's tonality is suitable for heavy and pop tones, which means she would be using this guitar a lot. Does this mean sayonara to the black HSS Strat? I hope not.

Now, I don't know if it's Google giving me a bad translation or if it is actually picking up the subtleties of the sentence itself, the translated sentences seem to indicate that MAMI chose the specs ("I made etc etc..." - perhaps Jade could look at the caption in the photo and help clarify) eg gold hardware, maple neck/fingerboard. So, is this an MiJ piece? Or a Custom Shop order from the US? Hope there'll be other articles on these new guitars soon so we can know more about them.

One of the trickiest things with Japanese is that you don't always need a pronoun (I, we, he, she, they, etc.) in a sentence for it to make sense, and (in)conveniently none of these sentences have them, haha. However, it does seem like this is a guitar customized by MAMI, so I translated it to make it read that way:

The grain of the wood was made visible by making it a vintage cherry red color. The neck and fretboard were made of maple to bring out the brightness. Features such as the bridge and tuning pegs were made gold to bring out a feeling of quality. I made sure to make its appearance pop without giving it a heavy feeling and not making it too low-key. The sound is also important, but I took being able to use it for a long time into consideration.

Guessing it's MIJ based on the headstock decal, which is inverted. Fender Japan has been doing this forever on certain models and it drives me nuts. I think there may have been a few transition era US Strat decals that were like this, but 99% of US models have a gold logo with black outline on a red headstock. It's unlikely that Mami would have specified that either way, so it points to it being MIJ.

The pearl pickguard also looks MIJ to me; they're very white compared to the American ones. Ditto for the maple fretboard.

I know that back when there actually was a Fender Japan, they'd do one-offs like this for artists periodically. Fender Japan no longer exists as a paper entity, but whichever factory actually makes these probably just had to get approval from Fender in America rather than Kanda Shokai. I'm guessing that otherwise it's just like the way the other artist models were made in the past.

Fender "Japan" (kinda) is back somewhat, though - possibly in a limited sense. The peeps at Fender prolly let the girls have a chance at getting a customised piece each while they have a chance. If I were to speculate, that is.

Well that's why I said as a paper entity. Fender Japan was just a name; the company was actually Kanda Shokai, but they were just the rights holders to the Fender name in Japan. The actual work was done by various guitar makers. So previously Kanda Shokai had approval over making one-offs, but they'd have one of these other factories build the guitars.

Those factories all still exist and continue making Fender guitars for the Japanese market, but now it's FMIC in America that controls it and there is no "Fender Japan". It's all just the same Fender we know here. So probably Dyna Gakki or Tokai Gakki or some other factory there made this guitar same as they always would have, but now it's just under the supervision of Fender in California.

So, just interesting that they're still doing this, because I wonder who approached whom to do it. There's no Japanese intermediary anymore. I think they must have some contacts with FMIC based on the previous Squier custom guitars, because Squier as a brand didn't exist in Japan at that time (and Kanda Shokai didn't seem to have the rights to it), so I always thought that deal must have been through FMIC. But those guitars I always suspected were actually US custom shop guitars with Squier decals put on them for marketing, whereas these definitely look Japanese to me. I wonder if they will end up using them to market their "Japan exclusive" guitars in the same way they did with Squier.

Whatever happened to the white Les Paul Double Cut guitar Mami played in the early days as seen in the DOLL and SAKURA GOODBYE videos? I am not sure if this was an actual Gibson since it's hard to see the headstock in photos and videos, but I always thought Mami looked pretty bad a** with it (like a schoolgirl Johnny Ramone, even thought he played a Mosrite).
