7-Net's Reading Girls - Interview 14: SCANDAL

SCANDAL is an all-girl band who writes and composes their own songs, with daily happenings and feelings at a specific moment acting as "seeds of music." They will be releasing 『Kiss from the darkness』, their new album containing 11 songs, on February 12th. "Fuzzy," one of those songs on the album, was inspired by a novel.

The lyrics for our digital single "Fuzzy" actually came to be by expanding on the image I have of my favorite book "Itsuka Wakareru. Demo Sore wa Kyou de wa Nai" (Someday, We Will Part Ways. But Today Is Not That Day). For me, reading is a hobby that makes one's time meaningful, whether it's while on the move; while taking a bath; or before going to sleep. So, this was the first time [a book] was the inspirational source for my lyrics! It may be the result of us starting to compose our own music from around 2015, and that everything in our everyday lives can be "seeds of music." (RINA)

These girls use heart-stirring experiences, both good and bad, in their musical activities. The curiosity of desiring to touch a yet-unknown world is the driving force for what's next for them.

Looking back, I had a bit of a superiority complex when I was student when it came to digging up cultures that my classmates didn't know about. The trigger was getting the novel "Gummy Chocolate Pineapple" by Kenji Otsuki when I was in high school. It's a story whose main character likes biased culture such as underground rock music and B-class horror movies, and for me, who didn't even know about the band Red Hot Chili Peppers back then, it was full of things I had no idea about. After I finished reading it, I understood the feelings of men in subcultures who believe, "If you have different values from others, you might be able to do something interesting." When I talked about the culture and knowledge that only I knew about, I was glad to be asked "What's that?" (laughs). (TOMOMI)

The accumulation of seeking new stimuli is what's shaping them now. There seemed to be a big challenge to see the yet-unknown scenery during production for this album.

It took a long time, and, honestly, it wasn't all fun and games. Pain also comes with production—rather, it was so tough at times that my chest would tighten. However, since the process was like that, the pleasure and joy after completing it were that much more prevalent. It was a turning point in maturation for both the band and myself. (MAMI)

However, the completion of this work is just a stepping stone. Their next goal is their world tour starting in March.

On March 7th at Atsugi City Cultural Hall・Large Hall in Kanagawa Prefecture, our world tour spanning roughly one year will begin. Right now, with my singing voice, it's so much fun to express the songs filled with the members' feelings. Through songs, there's a worth that comes with performing, and it brings out emotions that aren't found within you... I think that this is also something that helped me grow. I can't wait to send out who we are right now to those who are looking forward to SCANDAL's music. (HARUNA)

＜SASUKE's comments＞

It was already a great song when I got to listen to the demo, so I honestly thought that we could just put it out as-is (laughs), but I did try arranging and changing its original impression. From the lyrics and the atmosphere of the song, I freely created what this song wants to convey and its image so as not to break it. I was glad that I was able to attend the recording and have fun the entire time with the members through trial and error. I'd love for many people to listen to it!

＜Yusuke Takeda (RADWIMPS)'s comments＞

I was able to shape the song while being excited the entire time, leaving the sound that I envisioned when I first heard the demo of this song. I'd be happy if I could help to convey the appeal of this song to the listener. I am very honored to be involved in the production of such a wonderful song. Thank you so much to TOMOMI, who first reached out to me; the members of SCANDAL; and their staff.

M6. NEON TOWN ESCAPE
＜Chiaki Sato's comments＞

I got to produce the song「NEON TOWN ESCAPE」, which HARUNA composed. Since I usually hang out with HARUNA during our downtimes, it felt very fresh and exciting getting to work together. The band's basic performance was almost completed from the start, so I arranged it with the image of adding new colors with synths and wind instruments. I had the drums leap out a bit to go along with the singing and bass groove. As a result, I think this sound spotlights the new side of SCANDAL. I can't wait to see what it'll be like live!

A vinyl version of Kiss from the darkness will be released! The cover is the same as the Regular Edition. Please note that it will be released on March 4th, which is three weeks after the album officially comes out.

It's already our 9th album
We've completed something interesting
That we, who didn't think we'd come this far, nor make something like this,
Could not have expected

This is something I personally feel,
But during the time frame we were making this album,
I had a lot of trouble
With my abilities such as the drums and lyrics.

In regards to continuing to create new music
And always crafting energetic live shows,
I once again thought
That it was very important to have a good interaction
With the waves of my heart
And to forgive and recognize others as well as myself

I've been working too hard on one thing
Since the band started when I was a middle schooler
I have a habit of overstraining myself when I'm alone,
And there are parts of me I just can't seem to like
Because I haven't changed

Although I couldn't really turn
Things like sadness and anger
Into music that well,
It seems that all my emotions
As well as humanity, temperature, and smell
Were finally born in sound as well

"Kiss from the darkness"
To translate that literally into Japanese would be "暗闇からのキス" (Kurayami kara no kisu)

When you translate that into SCANDAL's style, it would be
"Whatever happens, it'll be okay. Whatever will be, will be"
We included those emotions into it.

It is an album
Where we went beyond the rules that were made unknowingly,
And where we faced music and ourselves
In more ways than ever before
We made it with no holds barred.

It's the first album
That will be released via our precious secret base,
Our private record label "her"
Please look forward to it!




Since we've made a great album,
We'll be delivering it worldwide again!

SCANDAL will be releasing their first album from their private label next February. They will also be holding a world tour starting in March

SCANDAL will be releasing 『Kiss from the darkness』, their first album release from their private label 「her」, on February 12th (Wed).

This will be SCANDAL's overall 9th album, and their first album release in two years since their previous album 『HONEY』. A total of 11 songs will be on it, including the singles released via 「her」: "Masterpiece," "Mabataki," "Fuzzy," "Saishuuheiki, Kimi."

There will be a total of four editions: Regular, DVD (Limited Edition A), Magazine (Limited Edition B), and DVD+T-Shirt (Deluxe Limited Edition). The DVD Edition contains a DVD with a documentary film that follows the members for one year following the establishment of their private label 「her」. The Magazine Edition includes Vol.2 of 『”her” Magazine』, the magazine that was also included in their February single 『Masterpiece / Mabataki』. The DVD+T-Shirt Edition includes a deluxe box that comes with a DVD containing a music video collection, and also includes a t-shirt with the album's cover printed on it. Additionally, they announced that there will be purchaser bonuses, such as an original clear file given to those who preorder the album, and those who purchase from select chain stores. Other details will be announced at a later date.

Vocalist HARUNA said, "I think that you can feel new challenges and experimental parts from songs one has already released, but there's still much more you haven't seen yet. We have confidence in this album; it's insane. Our creative energy is exploding." Drummer RINA, who wrote the lyrics for many of the songs, talked about the about the inner theme of the album: "I think that we were able to take all of our ups and downs, strengths and weaknesses and turn them all into seeds of music, and then turn those into songs. 'Whatever happens, it'll be okay. Somehow, it will be'—that's what's included in the title 『Kiss from the darkness』."

The album covers were also released at the same time. They were made by the collage artist Q-TA, who also handled the covers for their single 『Masterpiece / Mabataki』, and who active both abroad and overseas. Q-TA said this about the artwork: "I gave attention to their innocent aspects hidden among their intensity, and I expressed the current SCANDAL as who they are on the inside, not on the outside."

Additionally, they will be holding a world tour starting next March called 「SCANDAL WORLD TOUR 2020 “Kiss from the darkness”」 in support of this new album. They will be holding a domestic hall tour consisting of 19 performances that starts from 3/7 (Sat) at Atsugi City Cultural Hall in Kanagawa and concludes on 5/5 (Tue) and 5/6 (Wed) with two performances at ORIX Theatre in Osaka. They will also be conducting performances overseas. Information on the overseas performances will be announced at a later date.
