Contemporary artists SCANDAL talk about their outlook on work and love
JJnet - SCANDAL's Outlook on Work and Love RdUbf0X

10 years ago. Those of the same generation accessed [the Japanese social networking site] mixi with their sparkly, decorated flip phones; wore sheepskin boots in the winter; and reminds us of the good-looking guys in the drama "ROOKIES"... There weren't many people who looked up to SCANDAL, an actual high school all-girl band who wore school uniforms like us while singing. It's been 10 years since then. The girls have become adults together with us. This is JJnet's first interview with these girls who have reached the jucture in their lives of celebrating the 10th anniversary of their major label debut. For our first meeting, we had them talk about their current state of mind that had them taking on new challenges, as well as their current love lives.

First, let's review the members of SCANDAL!

SCANDAL is a four-piece all-girl band who had their major label debut in 2008 with 『DOLL』. The following year, their song 『Shoujo S』 was nominated for Best New Artist at the Japan Record Awards. In recent years, they have garnered attention as fashion icons, and currently produce their own apparel brand called 「Feedback!」.

Our jobs = the band. Having a job doing what you love really is a lot of fun
JJnet - SCANDAL's Outlook on Work and Love FEckYKY

HARUNA: We made our major label debut wearing school uniforms, and last year was its 10th anniversary. As both we and the band have gotten older, we established our new record label "her." When we were on the verge of our 10th anniversary, we had vague thoughts of wanting to do something new, and something we could be excited for. We naturally came to the idea of "Let's make music in a new environment!"

RINA: We established a new label because we wanted to challenge ourselves in a positive way in order to make even newer music, and make it more freely than ever before. We went ahead with preparations while feeling excited.

TOMOMI: We were able to do what we loved for work, so, looking back, it really has been a lot of fun.

RINA: Music has always been the center of our lives ever since we were middle and high school students. We've always kept at it because we love it, and it feels like that's supported us. Of course, there were also times when we couldn't write lyrics, and times when nothing was going right... Even so, we couldn't give up because the band is important to us. That's why I think that there are so many things we've been able to see because we've been continuing to work hard in our teens and 20s.

If we have plans for both work and with a boyfriend, we'll choose work. In the future we want to be a band even when we're parents
JJnet - SCANDAL's Outlook on Work and Love 751zItH

MAMI: When we talk to each other privately, we often talk about work and about our songs (laughs).

RINA: We mainly talk about work, but we do talk about all kinds of things. Stuff like, "Where have you gone recently in private?", and about love. Since we all live close to each other, we often meet up at nearby cafes.

MAMI: We can't stop talking when we meet up. We also talk the entire way back home (laughs). We talk about things we can sympathize with because we're band members, like work and love. I personally talk about work the most, though...

RINA: That's probably the same for all of us.

MAMI: For example, even if your boyfriend invites you out to eat, if you have work to do then you'll choose work. So, if you have a relationship where you can both understand one another, isn't that love and work successfully balancing each other?

TOMOMI: It's nice if it seems like, "I can do my best because I have this person!" You can make your partner happy by working hard. It's great to have a relationship where you can both grow together by being together.

HARUNA: Both giving your all in love and with your work is ideal. Although it's tough, it's necessary for both of you to be prepared to continue on.

MAMI: I think that the four of us will eventually experience marriage and childbirth, but right now our work comes first. Our environment was newly changed with the establishment of our new label, and the things we can do have expanded so much, so we would like to concentrate on our music and band activities.

HARUNA: We want to also grow as a band while having experiences as women. Even if we become mothers someday, I hope we can juggle that with being in a band.

Thanks for the translations!

Through the various interviews, I really feel that the creation of their label was the key to ensuring the future of the band in the long term (which was no longer possible with Sony Music).

They also seek the right balance between professional life and private life which must not be easy when you are an artist.

I was interested to read the comments about getting older, getting married & having kids & still carry on as a band. I seem to remember a HARUNA monologue to camera after their Mexico gig in the "Hello World" tour. Then she was commenting on how hard the band had worked over the previous ten years, on how they weren't young anymore & she didn't think they could continue for another ten years. A slight change of outlook!
I have also always been intrigued by the raison d'etre of the creation of "her". This has probably been covered under other forum headings but I haven't come across them. From what I understand in many interviews with band members in the past they have always insisted that they have "total artistic freedom" being signed to Sony. So how does the claim of the creation of "her" being in order to gain the same freedom work? And what about the obvious down side? Will they have the resources to put on an event as big as the "10th Anniversary Festival" again? Indeed, will they be able to produce any more DVDs /Blu-rays of their live concerts in future? SCANDAL, in my opinion, is very much a live band rather than a studio band. I have bought all their singles & albums on CD ('cos I'm something of a completist) but what I play & love are their DVDs. And now that we have treated ourselves to the latest TV format at home I'm catching up by buying all their Blu-rays - pity they didn't bring out their first one "BEST*SCANDAL 2009" on Blu-ray: that is such an unbelievable classic - I've actually bought a second DVD of that in case I wear out the original one I bought!.
Anyway, I hope their new lives work out for them, but I would prefer them to concentrate on the music side rather than fashion shoots etc. We waited too long for their latest rather sparse offering & although die-hard fans will wait, the fickle popular music market moves on.
Keep up the good work.

I think they have more artistic freedom now that they have created their own label. I think Sony was not as motivated as a few years ago to support the band. So the only choice to secure the future was to sign with a new record company

I suspect that it has a lot to do with a different freedom, to be more flexible about their schedules. SONY could have allowed artistic freedom but insisted on a heavy work schedule including delivering a certain number of studio recordings. I mean SONY are a business, right? Haruna said awhile back she couldn't see how they could go another ten years at the same pace. I think the first time they all took more than two weeks off was right after the 10th anniversary SCAFES! Now here they're reminding us that even with continuing to build their lives around their work as a band, they still think about starting families. We have one more thing to admire in them, their solidarity, consciousness and determination as women to follow their path and make it work.

By the time I read this interview, Aldious announced their guitarist is pregnant and getting married soon. So they hired Narumi (a virtuoso ex.Detrose/Disqualia) as replacement from the remaining of their tour from mid June.
I start thinking what will it be when it happen to Scandal.

I can't imagine Scandal hiring a replacement member if anything like that happens. Female Japanese metal bands on the other hand are known for the strain of revolving doors going on. That's when you realize that Scandal stability and durability is amazing.

Yes it depends on the Band, the British group Hawkwind has had over 50 different members but SCANDAL would not be the same with a different girl.

Absolutely. I think you'll find that SCANDAL are made from sterner stuff than Aldious. Having been through thick & thin & their ups & downs together since day one. It must have been quite a journey from being lowly buskers in Osaka Castle Park to having their own concert in Osaka Castle Hall.
I'm sure we all remember the story of RINA apparently announcing she wanted to quit the band because she thought that her poor standard of drumming was holding the band back, & the quick response from the other three was "No RINA = No SCANDAL". Similarly when HARUNA contracted a serious throat infection just before they were about to embark on a sold-out tour & she suggested they get a replacement lead singer, the response was "No HARUNA = No SCANDAL" - tour cancelled.
They certainly see themselves as an indivisible foursome.

Don't forget when the band was to play in Hawaii a couple years ago and Mami had to be hospitalized.  They cancelled the show rather than getting a fill-in for the day.  I think this what we can expect if any of them need to go on maternal leave.  As long as they don't start having strange mishaps with the drummer a la Spinal Tap, I expect they will remain together a long time.  It would be awful if Rina were to spontaneously combust on stage or be involved in a bizarre gardening accident.

We could all agree that without any of the "original" members, SCANDAL will be just a shadow of what it currently is.
