I'm trying to teach myself how to say how many times something has happened using google translate, so I'm naturally suspicious of the results. :) Are these the correct uses?

once = 1度 (ichi-do)
twice = 2回 (ni-kai)
3 times = 3回 (san-kai)
47 times = 47回 (yon-jyu nana-kai)
Saw a concert/show 3 times = ライブは3回見ました。(Raibu-wa san-kai mimashita.)
Saw a concert/show only once = ライブは1度だけ見ました。 (Raibu-wa ichi-do dake mimashita.)

320, those are pretty much correct. While I don't recommend teaching yourself Japanese via G-Trans, -度 and -回 are pretty much interchangeable when you are talking about occurrences. It's the other uses for each that differentiate them. Style also plays a role, but you may not have enough experience to utilize that.

Thanks for your question. .balloon.

Minasan ganbatte kudasai!
(Everyone do your best!) <--- err.. i really suck at translating things lol

Anyway, I have another question if you don't mind..
I often see this ~ちゃう ( -chau ) like たべちゃう....
Though I don't really know what does ~ちゃう imply..

Also.. I wanna share some resources I use in learning Japanese Nice one
1. rikaichan (firefox) /rikaikun (chrome) - i find this very useful since you can just hover on japanese characters and see the definition, plus the reading for it.. but you need to be able to read kana first since the readings are provided in kana XD

Firefox - www.polarcloud.com/rikaichan/
Chrome - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/jipdnfibhldikgcjhfnomkfpcebammhp?hl=fil

2. www.alc.co.jp - learned this from tenjou-sensei.. i find it very useful too since it provides a lot of examples for study <3

3. www.nihongoichiban.com - I find this very useful especially for JLPT takers..

4. www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar - Tae Kim's ever useful grammar guide.. I learned almost everything here.. Of course, with a lot of practice on Twitter xD

That's all! Goodluck and have fun learning Nice one

~ちゃう = ~しまう
so saying たべちゃうis actually the same as saying たべてしまうbut in a more casual way.

and yeah, alc is very useful. Highly recommended, but only if you know the kanji for the word you're looking for.

If you use Firefox you can you use the Rikaichan add-on to view the readings for kanji or the meanings of words when you hover over them. It can make ALC more accessible. Nice one

I also second your recommendation of it.

EDIT: I just read back in the topic and it was posted. Sorry. :S

Seeing that there is a new thread on learning Japanese, I'm just trying to re-live this thread to share with new members what others have been sharing previously.

Anyone as expert as tenjou-san and would like to give us learners some pointers, do feel free to do so.

Anyone with questions related to the Japanese language, do go ahead and ask~~

(I'm a learner, just in case anyone starts to direct the questions to me LOL)

I'm not an expert, but I was going through some of my notes today that native speakers told me about how to speak more naturally.

- When saying words try to think that you're saying at least two characters at once. So, when you think about saying ありがとう imagine the word in your head as あり-がとう, not あ-り-が-とう.

- If you're thinking in romaji, imagine the characters written as: と=To, そ=So, へ=He, etc... with a big consonant and a small vowel. Don't over-emphasize the vowels, pretend they're "small".

- Getting the beginning and the end of a word right is most important. In fast natural speech the middle of the word is often really quick and sloppy anyways.

- Say particles as if they're part of the previous word. So like, the が and じゃ in "日本語が上手じゃありません。” are said completely as if they're the end of the previous word.

Hmm am interested in learning too so i shall reply to this thread .nerd.

Currently i am waiting for my national service to start ( aka i have little freedom left, about 1 month)
Have been learning online from different sites i can find but only know how to speak the very basics, for example asking for directions and buying stuff etc, hope to be able to learn how to write the basics also before i go and serve my nation haha. After the 2 years serving my nation i am going to take up a japanese language course.

wow ... I´m not good in japanese, but after reading the posts ... I think I will join, or at least have an eye on this topic.
If I will learn the basics ... so I can understand something, it will be good.
So if someone has something basic for VERY beginers, then I won´t reject it.
Thank you.
