Theme:RINA

I dropped by Shibuya TSUTAYA after our recording yesterday.
CD shops and bookstores are always stable and calming.
Our new song 「Awanai Tsumori no, Genki de ne」
More have been added!
It's a song that matches the weather of the city todayー. The blue sky has a sadness to it.

Today we're in the midst of recording vocals.
Although it'll be a little while before this song will reach everyone, I think it's really goodー.
You'll be surprisedー.

Each day is noisy as we disregard the clock.
We're making many songs. There are many varieties.

Well I guess this confirms that they are working hard on a new album doesn't it?

She says "We're making many songs. There are many varieties.", so i don't see any other possibility than a new album. I doubt she would say that just a for a new song/single with a b-side?

Even if it's the case it will still probably takes months to be released and their last (real) album was released in september 2012. If we check the release dates of their albums it seems they release a new album almost every year (not counting the collection/best of albums of course) check it out :

YAH! YAH! YAH! HELLO WE ARE SCANDAL : 1st album 2008.08.08
BEST SCANDAL : 2nd album 2009.10.21
TEMPTATION BOX : 3rd album 2010.08.11
R-GIRL's ROCK! : 4th album 2010.11.17 (Cover mini-album)
BABY ACTION : 5th album 2011.08.10
SCANDAL SHOW : 6th album 2012.03.07 (Best of album)
Queens are trumps : 7th album 2012.09.26
ENCORE SHOW : 8th album 2013.02.06 (B-sides album)

In bold you have the normal albums, there is approximately a one year gap between each release. So the next new album should be a normal album (not collection, b-sides, covers, etc) and should be out near september/october hopefully.

If that's the case it makes sense to start to work on it now because this summer they have a heavy schedule and won't be able to focus on new songs. Then after the summer they can finalize the songs/album and release it/promote it.

I'm always surprised at how often Japanese bands release albums. Hopefully they don't burn themselves out too much. Though I also wish some western bands would release content as often as bands in Japan .please.

It's pretty much expected that Japanese bands release a new album every year or so. So this is a normal schedule.

Singles also generally lead up to an album release, so once they start releasing singles, you know at that point that a new album's coming in a few months.

Western bands have it too easy... whenever I see a western band complaining about being stuck or things "not feeling right", I just want to yell at them to get to work!

Of course, Scandal has a lot of help. Western bands often try to do too much themselves. In Japan, almost any band is more of a collaboration between a whole team of people and outside writers. So they don't have to come up with 12 songs all by themselves, and no single writer is usually doing more than 2 or 3 per album. That helps them move a lot quicker.

It boils down to the many ways one can skin a cat.

No disrespect to musicians/singers who get help from songwriters, I am one for bands who write their own stuff. And if the album comes out once in two (or more) years even, it doesn't really matter. And I look forward to the time will come when we have SCANDAL members having full credit to both song and lyric composition for an entire record.

I didn't know it was so different in Japan for the albums release. I guess they just have a different style/industry. I'm also used to the western style where it can take much muuuuuuch more than a year between each album.

So it's great to know that we will get another album this year ^_^

Why is why in some other thread (I forgot where...) I said it'd be too soon for them to make new album around this June since they don't seem to produce a lot of songs/singles after their last normal album. The time just seems pretty magical if they can produce 10-12 songs that fast, with all the lyrics generation, musical arrangement, recording, and some other stuff.

I expect a new album some time in Aug/Sep (together with their customary autumn tour) assuming they maintain their routine. I already set aside a budget for it En route - 2013-05-26 (RINA) 628112

To be fair we don't know how many songs they have recorded so far, so the exact timing is impossible to pinpoint. But June is probably too soon I think.

That probably won't ever happen. I'd be happy if it did, but for many reasons, it won't.

I used to feel the way you feel but one day I just decided to ask myself why it mattered, and I couldn't come up with an answer. Why does the performer of a song also have to be the songwriter? Mozart didn't get up and play all the instruments for his musical pieces, and on the other hand Frank Sinatra hardly wrote any of the songs he's famous for performing. The "singer/songwriter" thing is actually a pretty new idea if you go back through history, and I can't think of a reason why it *has* to be that way for rock music.

HaRuRiNaMaMiToMo wrote:I didn't know it was so different in Japan for the albums release. I guess they just have a different style/industry. I'm also used to the western style where it can take much muuuuuuch more than a year between each album.

Western bands are usually contracted for a certain number of albums within a certain period of time, but if a band gets very popular, they can set really lenient terms for the amount of time in between. And they often don't fulfill those terms anyway, because of writer's block or whatever.

I am not sure of every little detail of the Japanese system but I know it is not like that. Being in a band is more like a regular job. Most artists are employed by an "office", which in Scandal's case would be Epic. Most artists (except the *most* popular and senior) are actual employees, who have to show up to work every day. A lot of popular Japanese artists have talked about their early days in their office, where they're gathered with a bunch of other "up and comers" training and practicing and basically waiting until the office schedules them for something outside. Some never get scheduled for anything and eventually just quit once their employment contract lets them. Others get lucky and get popular and have stuff to do pretty much every day.

But that's why people shouldn't worry about Scandal being overworked with this kind of schedule. They'd probably otherwise be going in to work every day anyway, and just spending all their time learning and practicing their instruments, having boring meetings and planning sessions, or worse. I'm sure it's a lot more fun for them to be recording and doing things out on the road.

Spacecadet is right, we have to remember Japan is a very different culture to our's.
I know schoolgirls who are at school until 4pm, then 'cram school' paid for by their parents from 6pm to 10pm and they have a saturday job.
But they still find time to have fun ?
It is just normal to them and most Japanese people.

But as far as making an album right now, I think it's definitely possible. RINA has said before on Twitter that they're constantly/always making new songs.

B-side is the term used for the other song in a single release. For SCANDAL's latest single, the song "Awanai tsumori no, genki de ne" is the A-side song because it's the title/main song (not sure if this is the correct term) of the single. The B-side song is "24 Jikan plus no Yoake Mae". This is the other song aside from the main song.

Albums are usually composed of more than 4 tracks or lasts for more than 25 minutes. But in SCANDAL's case, their albums usually consist of 12 songs.

@topic: From Rina's post, we can say that they are recording for an original album that will be released maybe around the next few months this year, or they'll be releasing another single around July or August, then release the album by September or October or by the next 2 weeks after the new single release (not the Awanai single).

Anyway, I always look forward to their releases. .happy.

The reason it's called a "side" (if you think about it why do songs on a CD has a side?!) is because in the old days when people listen to vinyl records as the norm, a single has the main song on side A, and the extra/bonus song on side B. Yup, you flip the record over to listen to side B. How tedious, you say.

I am old enough to remember those. Hahahaha. En route - 2013-05-26 (RINA) 2282749210
