I want to meet my 6th grade, 12-year-old self. I aimed high just 10 years ago when I was 12. I've admired Namie Amuro-san since I was in kindergarten, and when I was 12 I remember in a fashion magazine seeing a notice about an audition for a school. I put in a submission, which then became the chance to form SCANDAL. Back then, I was like, "I'm really going to become a singer!" I honestly believed that and didn't doubt it. I'd want to meet the me who didn't think entirely about superfluous things.

The tour in America. In many ways, it was a game!
America was, in any case, shocking. It was before our debut, and it was the first time I had gone overseas. I was amazed that we were able to do lives overseas, and surprisingly I got addicted to the climate in Los Angeles as well as the extent of freedom we had, so much so that I didn't want to go back (laughs). I felt like we were drowning in lives, but we threw away the idea that we had to play lives properly. First was to move our bodies, just as we thought, and the importance of performances sunk deeply into our minds. For me it was a good experience, and it was the land where we thought we wouldn't overcome that barrier and move forward.

Whether it's inspiration or not I don't know, but you can meet youkai (monsters). I met a tengu once during a pre-school summer holiday. My favorite thing was playing on my own in a vinyl pool. That day, as I prepared my swimwear and went out of the front door, there was a tengu in front of the pool. Unreasonably red, it was carrying a stick with a bell attached, and it wore a skirt and geta (wooden clogs). It was staring at me. Thinking that it was rather dangerous, I called out for my mother, but then it wasn't there anymore... And also, while playing with a ball in the drawing room, I saw an unreasonably large foot and a bee that was almost as big as me!

I originally watched it because this drama was on TV the year I was born but I totally love it. I thought, "I want to be Rika Akana!" I think I'd like to say a similar line someday (laughs).

Walking from Kyobashi to Umeda while talking with MAMI. In the end we got so tired that we came back by train.
During our indies period in Osaka, after studio practice had finished, it became a daily routine to take a stroll with MAMI. HARUNA and TOMOMI would stay at home, having girl talk and watching DVDs, but mornings and evenings we walked around. The course was generally decided, but one day, daringly, we walked what seemed a much greater distance that usual. Talking about bands, memorizing guitar terminology etc., talking about music all the while. Anyway, we kept on walking for about three stops and then came back by train, but I haven't forgotten the scenes I saw that time. I think that was the first moment my mother didn't decide something; I myself made the decision of what I would do.

When I see high school students, in uniform, on a date, my chest gets really tight. At my high school, boys wore the gakuran, and girls wore blazers. But, 90% of the students were girls. If there were two boys in the class, it would feel like there were so many of them there. So, I couldn’t see boys as boys, and couples at school had that gakuran-blazer feeling, so I didn’t think about it. But for the students who wear the gakuran and the sailor uniform, or students who both wear blazers, those are the couples I look for. When I see them, I think, “I wonder if I could have tried that once?”

White rice.
At first it was bread. I felt like bread in the morning, bread for lunch and bread for dinner (laughs). I liked sweet bread, then cheesy bread, then through side-dish sandwiches*, I got interested in rice. Limited to white rice at that. I don’t like rice with toppings. If there are toppings, I’ll only eat the toppings. I particularly like curry roux (sauce) and rice, but I don’t like bibimbap, which you have to mix. I hate mixing rice with side dishes.

I put in a submission, which then became the chance to form SCANDAL. "I'm really going to become a singer!" At that time, I honestly believed that and didn't doubt it.
